Artist's Statement
As a graphic designer, I love experimenting with creative layouts and treating typography as imagery to create designs that are innovative. It can be a challenge dealing with large bodies of text and arranging these components using visual hierarchy to make the layout visually appealing. However, this challenge is what speaks to me the most about graphic design. It's asking myself how I can create something new each time when I'm faced with a similar puzzle.
My work is influenced by my hobbies, past and everyday life. I've always been an avid nature lover, hiking throughout the woods and enjoying the plant life around me. I find myself pulling inspiration from these walks and using the organic quality of nature in my designs. My background in painting and figure drawing can also be seen having a similar influence through the illustrative quality of my designs and incorporation of various textures. The colors I choose in my work must be a reflection of the design at hand. It should draw an audience in, and set the mood of the piece. Depending on the design, I find a way to incorporate saturated hues as this helps the piece stand out.
Throughout my time spent in school, I've learned the power of constructive feedback and the importance it plays in the growth of a designer. My goal is to never stop learning and to continue to improve my designs even when I graduate from SUNY Empire State College.
